The three subtle counterparts of the DoshasVata, Pitta and Kapha are known as Prana, Ojas and Tejas. You might have heard of them throughout our posts, so we thought we would break them down. In the simplest of terms, Prana relates to air and Vata, Tejas relates to fire and Pitta, and Ojas relates to water and Kapha; all three are the positive essences of the doshas and help to control the ordinary functions of the body and mind. It is vital to maintain these essences, as they are the keys to vitality, clarity and endurance. It can possibly even lead to a higher evolutionary potential.

Prana is the primal life force. The subtle energy behind all mind-body function and the catalyst for all matter that manifests. It’s also responsible for the coordination of breathing, your senses, and the mind. Prana is taken in through liquids and breathing, and is carried through the liquid in our body (blood & plasma) as well as absorbed through the senses of hearing and touch. The mind allows Prana to move and respond to all the changes life throws at us. It is also responsible for enthusiasm and expression from the psyche. At the deepest levels of consciousness, it helps govern the development of higher states of consciousness.

Inner radiance is known as Tejas, and is the subtle energy of fire. It is digested through impressions, such as food, sunlight and our thoughts. Tejas is what helps the mind perceive and judge aspects of life correctly. It also helps govern the development of higher perceptual qualities. At the deepest levels of consciousness, it holds the insight of our will and spiritual aspirations.

Ojas is the primal vigor and is the subtle energy of water. It is the essence of digested food, our impressions and thoughts, and is absorbed through taste and smell. It also provides psychological stability and endurance. At the deepest levels of consciousness, the Ojas is the material power from where the soul produces koshas also called energy bodies and can provide calm nourishment to the higher states of consciousness.
