Undo The Holidays With Ayurveda
It’s that time of year again! The time where we spend the holidays with our family and friends and throw caution and moderation to the wind. And of course that means plenty of food and holiday drinks. However, also adding to our overindulgences, there’s the stress of traveling, cooking, buying gifts and everything else that the holidays brings in tenfold. Thankfully, Ayurveda offers all kinds of natural remedies to help you get back on track just in time for the new year.
Holiday Problem: Chocolate
According to Ayurvedic practice, chocolate is considered a “srota blocker.” Srotas are channels of the body which ensure good health and vitality. If they are blocked, it can lead to major disease.
Antidote: You can counteract the chocolate you ate by having boiled water with cardamom pods. The hot water will help dissolve the poorly digested food in your system and the cardamom pods are a common and well received opener for the srotas.
Holiday Problem: Alcohol/Hangovers
The most common effect of alcohol is the destruction of the liver cells and liver function. One of the key components of indulging in alcohol is a hangover. According to Maharishi Ayurveda, alcohol dries out the ‘Ojas’. Ojas is one of the components of digestion and the primary link between consciousness and our bodies. It’s the equivalent of bliss and gives maximal health, immunity, healthy skin, strong eyes, mental clarity & helps to resist disease.
Antidote: Turmeric is excellent in reducing the damage done to the liver due to the excessive intake of alcoholic beverages. Just add 1 or 2 pinches to a regular glass of water or to your meal while you cook. Drink plenty of rehydration fluids, particularly water or the Morning Cleansing Drink.
Holiday Problem: Traveling (motion sickness)
Fresh Ginger is a popular remedy for nausea in both modern medicine and Ayurveda. Use 1/4 teaspoon of ginger with a little lemon juice and a pinch of salt every few hours should settle your stomach and get you back to normal.
And last but not least the best antidote to helping you get through the holiday season is moderation. Moderation is key to being able to enjoy yourself. Keeping that in mind, you can enjoy all the goodies that the holidays bring.
