Stretch to De-stress
Stress is, unfortunately, totally normal and a modern-day occurrence. Days are filled with sedentary excess and constant deadlines, which wreak havoc on the body. Everyday we are faced with the decision to either give in to what may complicate a day’s work, or to overcome the stress. It’s important to learn how to handle stresses in life. A stress-reducing morning practice is a great way to start the day!
When you wake up grab a glass of room temperature water, stretch and eat a healthy breakfast. Incorporating yoga into your morning routine is a simple way to allow your body to de-stress. This type of stretching helps you start your morning off on the right hand, leg and foot. Here are three simple exercises that anyone can do (and the good part is, you don’t have to be super flexible!):
1. Greet the sun.
It’s important to get some fresh air after sleeping for so many hours. Go outside or just open a window to get some air circulating. Stand straight with your feet shoulder-width apart, take a deep breath in, stretch your arms up above your head, and bend to your right side. Repeat the same exercise but bend to your left side. Repeat these bends for as many times as desired.
Breathing is such a natural process that we take for granted! Sit or stand on any surface you find most comfortable, then take ten deep long breaths in and out. Your stress won’t even have the chance to build up if you learn how to control your breathing!
3. It’s all about the limbs.
Lastly, take a moment to remember your limbs and give them a good stretch. Try poses (you can switch them up every morning) like downward-facing dog, child’s pose or warrior one to elongate the parts of your body that might get the most cramped during your day.
Start your day off right and you’re bound to have less stress, even if your day is as hectic as can be!
